LEDs -- Light Emitting Diodes

LED sizes

LEDs come in a number of different sizes, colors, brightness, and beam angles.  I sell the types I feel work the best when used to illuminate your displays.  LEDs come in different colors but we are interested mostly in the white LEDs.  But even here you have a choice:  Bright White, Cool White or Warm White.  Bright White is closest to outdoor sun light and is the light with a blue tinge.  Warm White LEDs closely matches the warm glow of incandescent lighting. Use warm white for building lighting (More yellow in their color). Cool White LEDs have a cool cast, much like fluorescent lighting (less blue than bright white).  I prefer using the Bright White LED strips as an accent light that fully complements the incandescent lights one will have in their displays.

Complementary lighting to Incandescent lights

These LED light bars work very well to illuminate the entire interior of individual rooms or for illuminating an entire room box without being over bearing.  These light bars work with either an AC or DC 12 volt power supply and can easily be wired into your dollhouse wiring.  They complement and help balance the look of incandescent lights alone.  I tell people that “the better you hide these lights, the better they work”.  I will put a small 2 LED light bar at the inside-top of each window to give the appearance of sunlight lightly coming into the room.  They are great when used to accent kitchen cabinets or glass display cases.  You will find that using these lights along with the normal incandescent lights within your display will balance the two extremes of the yellow in an incandescent and the blue emitted from these LEDs.  Together your display will look brighter, crisper and cleaner and the LEDs tend to eliminate all of the shadows in back corners.

Flexible Strip LEDs (Reel)

LED light roll
LED roll

These LEDs are the least expensive way to purchase a length of lights.  Each ribbon has an adhesive backing making it very easy to install.  These LEDs work with a direct current only, so you will have to use a 12 volt, voltage regulated power supply to be able to use them. REQUIRES A 12 VOLT REGULATED DC POWER SUPPLY. The above light bars work on AC or DC and can be used with any 12 volt power supply.
LED’s on a tape roll can be purchased in increments of every 3 LEDs or in a full 5 meter reel.  One can also buy Bright White or Warm White LEDs and in reels that have 30, 60 or 120 LEDs per meter.  I have listed an assortment of the most commonly requested combinations.  All of these reels are 3528 (35mm x 28mm)  size SMD (Surface Mount Device) and not the larger 5050 size.  Dealing with miniatures, the 3528 SMD is the most practical LED to purchase.  All of these LEDs have 120 degree angle of view.

3528 Flexible Strip LEDs.  60 LEDs per meter

3 LEDs (uses 20 milliamps per set of 3)            $1.45

18 LEDs (approx. 1 foot)(uses 120 milliamps)   $7.20

57 LEDs (approx. 3 feet)(uses 380 milliamps)   $19.95

Full Reel(300 LEDs)(requires 2 amps)             $108.00

Pre-Wired Single LEDs ready for 6, 9 or 12 Volt DC Batteries or Regulated Power Supply

Super Bright LEDs fully wired with 8 inch leads.    $2.25 each
Made to work with a battery or DC regulated power supply

Super Bright Universal LEDs fully wired with 8 inch leads.  $3.25 each
7 - 19 volts AC, DC, DCC

These LEDs look great in your projects!  Building lighting, Doll houses, Display boxes, any place you need nice bright lights running on DC power.  These 100,000 hour Super Bright solid non-flashing LEDs come fully assembled with a dropping resistor already added and 8" of insulated wire. No Soldering or assembly is needed but is always recommended.

Connect these LEDs right to a DC battery or to an appropriate DC regulated power supply.  The Universal LEDs will wire directly to your dollhouse wiring no mater what type 12 volt power source you may have and will have a rectifier and limiting resister attached to one of the legs of 8” wire.  See picture below.

LED Universal

Picture shows the three sizes of Universal LEDs and the Limiting resistor and rectifier needed to work with an AC transformer.  These Universal LEDs will work on 7-19 volts either AC or DC power supplies.
